What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye can be caused by inconsistency in your tear film. Your tear film consists of 3 layers:
- The oily outer layer
- The watery middle layer
- The inner mucus layer
Dry eye can occur when the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed. Inflammation can also occur from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a condition that affects the function of your meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil layer of your tear film.
When these glands become clogged or inflamed, they can’t produce enough oil to keep the tears from evaporating too quickly, leading to dry eye. Symptoms of MGD can include dryness, grittiness, redness, and stinging sensations in the eyes.
Identifying the Cause: Dry Eye Screening
Before recommending treatment, we’ll conduct a thorough dry eye screening to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. This screening may include:
- Dyes/Staining: Specialized dyes can highlight damage to the surface of your eye, indicating tear film instability.
- Schirmer’s Test: This test measures tear production to assess whether your eyes produce enough tears.
- Subjective TBUT (Tear Break-Up Time): This noninvasive test measures how long your tears evaporate after blinking.
By understanding the cause of your dry eye, we can tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.
Our Dry Eye Treatment Options
Our team works with you to find the right treatment option for your symptoms. Some common symptoms of dry eye can include:
- Scratchy and uncomfortable eyes
- Fluctuating vision
- A stinging or gritty feeling in the eye
- A burning feeling or the feeling of something foreign in the eye
Through our treatment options, we can help you get relief from your dry eye symptoms.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible inserts gently placed in the puncta, the tiny openings in your eyelids where tears drain into your nose.
By acting as a miniature dam, punctal plugs can prevent tears from draining away too quickly, allowing them to lubricate your eyes for longer.
Meibomian Gland Expression
Meibomian gland expression is a noninvasive procedure that involves applying gentle pressure to the meibomian glands. Expressing the oil in your eyelids can help improve the quality and quantity of your tears, reducing dry eye symptoms such as irritation, fatigue, and watery eyes.
TearCare
TearCare is an in-office treatment that uses low-level radiofrequency energy to gently warm and stimulate the meibomian glands. This can help to improve the quality and quantity of your tear production, offering long-term relief for chronic dry eye.
Medicated Eye Drops
We also offer a variety of brand-name medications to treat dry eye, including:
-
- Bruder
- Tyrvaya
- Restasis
- Xiidra
- Cequa
- Vevye
We’ll discuss the various options and recommend the medication that best suits your needs and preferences.
Eyelid Debridement
Blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids, can contribute to dry eye. Eyelid debridement involves gently removing debris and bacteria from the base of your eyelashes, helping to reduce inflammation and improve the overall health of your eyelids. This can alleviate dry eye symptoms and prevent future problems.
