Early Detection Saves Sight

Early detection is critical in preventing vision loss from diabetic eye disease. Our diabetic eye exams are designed to identify potential problems early on when treatment can be most effective.

We use diagnostic technology to create a comprehensive report and evaluate your eye health, going beyond what a standard eye exam can offer. Dr. Klufas will discuss the best action for your vision needs after your eye exam.

How Diabetes Affects Your Vision

Diabetes can lead to a higher chance of developing a variety of serious conditions that could potentially affect your vision if left untreated. These conditions can include:

Diabetic retinopathy is the primary vision loss concern linked to diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma don’t typically exhibit symptoms until their more advanced stages, which can make them incredibly difficult to detect without a comprehensive eye exam.

The Details of Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by high blood sugar due to diabetes. This damage is caused by a buildup of excess sugar in your blood that can damage your retina. The damage to your eyes occurs when sugar blocks the tiny blood vessels that go to your retina, causing them to leak fluid or bleed.

Early stages of diabetic retinopathy can display little to no symptoms, but some common signs and symptoms can include:

  • Seeing spots or floaters
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night

Our Diagnostic Technology

Our diabetic eye exams are about getting the full picture of your eye health to preserve it. Before we begin, we walk you through the exam and tell you what to expect.

Our exams can include the Optomap Plus and optical coherence tomography so Dr. Klufas can get more context for your specific needs. Dr. Klufas is also happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about any of our technology.

Optomap Plus

The Optomap Plus captures a high-resolution, panoramic image of the back of your eye. Think of it like a wide-angle picture. It allows us to examine the entire retina and optic nerve for signs of diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and other complications.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides a three-dimensional view of your retinal tissue, like a microscopic layer-by-layer scan. This technology allows us to detect subtle changes in your retina’s structure that may not be visible during a traditional eye exam. Early detection of these changes is crucial for preventing vision loss.

Our Approach to Your Eye Care

During your diabetic eye exam, we will:

  • Review your medical history and discuss any vision changes you may be experiencing.
  • Conduct a thorough eye examination, including visual acuity testing, pupil dilation, and examination of the internal structures of your eye.
  • Use imaging technology, like Optomap Plus and Zeiss Cirrus 5000 OCT.
  • Discuss your individual risk factors for diabetic eye disease and develop a personalized management plan.
  • If necessary, refer you to an ophthalmologist for specialized care.
