Cataract Diagnosis & Management

During your cataract exam, your doctor will assess your vision and check for signs of cataracts. If cataracts are present and impacting your vision, we’ll discuss your individual needs and preferences.

We’ll explain the benefits and potential risks of cataract surgery in detail, helping you to understand all available treatment options before making a decision.

Cataract Surgery: What to Expect

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed by a skilled ophthalmologist (eye surgeon). Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process:

  • The Cloudy Lens is Removed: During surgery, the clouded natural lens of your eye is gently removed.
  • A New Intraocular Lens (IOL) is Implanted: A clear artificial lens, called an IOL, is implanted in the place of your natural lens. IOLs come in various types, and we’ll work with you and your chosen ophthalmologist to determine the best lens option for your needs and vision goals.

Co-Managing Your Care

At Diamond K Eye Care, we believe in a collaborative approach to cataract care. While we don’t perform the surgery ourselves, we have a strong referral network of trusted ophthalmologists.

In fact, most patients we refer out for cataract surgery choose to co-manage their care with us. Co-management means we work closely with your ophthalmologist throughout the entire process.

Referral & Scheduling

We’ll refer you to a qualified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, helping you receive a high level of care. We’ll also work together to schedule your surgery at a convenient surgical facility.

After your surgery, you’ll return to Diamond K Eye Care for follow-up appointments. During these appointments, we’ll closely monitor your healing process, address any questions or concerns you may have.

We’ll also schedule one-day post-operative appointments to check your progress and monitor your recovery.

Following the initial recovery period, we’ll continue to manage your eye health with regular checkups. Depending on your needs and the type of IOL implanted, these checkups may be yearly or more frequent.

With You Every Step of the Way

Dr. Klufas and the team believe in patient education, and we’ll provide you with clear and comprehensive information about cataract surgery every step of the way. You can expect detailed explanations about:

  • The benefits and risks of cataract surgery are tailored to your specific situation.
  • What to expect before, during, and after surgery, including preparation instructions and recovery guidelines.
  • The different types of IOLs available and their potential benefits help you understand how these advanced lenses can improve your vision beyond simply replacing a cloudy lens.
  • Recovery and post-operative care, including medications, activity restrictions, and potential side effects.
